Description

A heavy bucket is suspended from a rod by multiple turns of a rope and does not lower. As the number of turns of the rope is decreased, the bucket will begin to lower.

Equipment

  • rods attachment
  • bucket
  • masses
  • rope

Instructions

Attach the rope to the handle of the bucket. Tie the rope around the rods attachment using several turns then fill the bucket with the masses. The bucket will not lower due to the rope friction around the rods. As the number of turns is reduced, the bucket will begin to lower. Also known as a capstan.
