Back to 5A - Electrostatics
PIRA index: 5A10.20

Description

This method is a combination of the Triboelectric effect and Charging by induction. The result is a charged piece of metal which can easily give its charge. An insulator would only give its charge at the point of contact.

Equipment

  • Fur
  • Styrofoam plate
  • Metallic disk

Instructions

  • Charge the plate by rubbing the fur on it.
  • Put the metallic disk on the plate.
  • Ground the disk (The plate keeps most of its charge but the combination of both object is neutral, making the disk charged.)
  • Separate the plate from the disk (be careful to not ground the disk once its not connected to the plate)
