Back to 3A - Oscillations
PIRA index: 3A50.70

Description

Tonic water in a U-shaped tube is illuminated by a black light. If the water is displaced to one side, it will oscillate back and forth in simple harmonic motion (SHM).

Equipment

  • clear rubber tube
  • rod and clamp holders
  • quinine liquid
  • black light

Instructions

Attach the tube using the clamp holders such that it forms a U-shape. Partially fill the tube with quinine. The quining will glow under black light. Begin the oscillation by blowing into one tube or simply lifting it quickly then returning it to rest position.

Keywords

oscillation, liquid, u shape, flexible tube, simple harmonic motion, SHM
